How To Use The Optical Power Meter?

August 20 , 2020

Optical power meter refers to an instrument used to measure absolute optical power or the relative loss of optical power through a section of optical fiber. Simply put, it is to measure the attenuation of the optical signal after fiber transmission.

Simple instructions:

1. When measuring the absolute optical power with the optical power meter, just connect the light source and look at the value in the second row of the screen in DBM as the optical power value.

2. Measure the attenuation of the optical fiber. If you know the luminous value of the light-emitting device, you can directly connect to the optical fiber under test and subtract the value from the luminous value of the light-emitting device to get the optical fiber attenuation value. If you don’t know the luminous value of the light-emitting device, do the following:

Optical power meter related unit: luminous value dBm

1) First of all, it needs to have equipment to provide light sources, such as fiber optic transceivers, optical transceivers, optical modules, stable light sources, etc. It can provide light source equipment with a luminous wavelength among 850nm, 960nm, 1300nm, 1310nm, 1490nm, 1550nm.

2) Adjust the wavelength in nm (the first row of the display screen). This is the output wavelength of the light source. The single mode is generally 1310nm and 1550nm, and the multimode is generally 850nm. If you are not sure, you can consult the lighting equipment manufacturer.

3) Luminous power value dBm (the second row of the display), the luminous value of a stable light source is directly displayed when connected.

4) dB (the third row of the display) is directly calculated during the first measurement and can be ignored.

General test use:

Insert directly when testing the luminous value, the dBm display is the luminous value.

Test attenuation (dB), set: the luminous value of the light-emitting device is A, then connect the fiber cable to be tested, and the luminous value is B. The subtraction of these two luminous values is the attenuation of the line under test. At this point, it can be obtained by automatic calculation. After measuring the luminous value of the device, press ZERO to clear it (without shutting down) and then connect the fiber cable to be measured. The third row will directly get the attenuation.
